Over the past several weeks, some public figures have, quite misguidedly, taken it upon themselves to judge the work of Québec’s family doctors. They have insinuated that difficulty in obtaining access to a family doctor can be blamed on the fact family that doctors do not provide sufficient follow-up to patients nor work an adequate number of hours. In light of these misleading accusations, we feel that it’s important to set the record straight. >>>

“The deterrent fee will have a negative effect on Quebecers’ health by delaying necessary consultations and harming health promotion, prevention and management of chronic diseases. Quebecers have the least access to a family physician in Canada. Indeed, one out of four Quebecers does not have a family physician, compared to only one out of thirteen in Ontario. The government should be trying to favour access to physicians. With the deterrent fee, it will instead restrict Quebecers’ access to the healthcare system even further” >>>

In recent years, there has been a clear lack of interest in family medicine on the part of medical graduates. A total of 184 residencies in family medicine, i.e. 18% of the positions available, have gone unfilled since 2007 in Quebec’s faculties of medicine. If these positions had been filled, 200,000 more Quebeckers could have a family doctor >>>

Pas moins de 184 postes de résidence en médecine familiale, soit 18% des postes offerts, n'ont pas été pourvus depuis 2007 dans les facultés de médecine du Québec (si ces postes avaient été comblés, 200 000 Québécois supplémentaires auraient pu être suivis par un médecin de famille).
